Workbench 2.x
(AmigaOS 2.x)
Screen Shots
A quick look at Amiga Workbench 2.0. Again, these screen shots were
taken with WinUAE.
Workbench 2 was released in 1990, initially only for the Amiga 3000
with support for other models added later.
Workbench 2.0 is capable of using higher resolution graphics modes.
The most prominent change is that all user interface controls now have
a beveled 3-D appearance.
It is interesting to note that other GUIs released around 1990 also
added similar beveled 3D control as part of a growing trend. I'm not exactly
positive, but it was probably NeXTStep that started this trend.
The "About" window identifies Kickstart and Workbench by their internal
version numbers.
In Workbench 2.0 it is now possible to see all "hidden" files that
do not have associated ".info" files.
This version also changes the way the scroll bar works. The scroll buttons
are now all in one corner, rather than at each end of a slider.
Preferences are separated out, and there are more of them.
This screen shot shows more of the 3D dialog controls.
Some bouncing around.
Some sites claim that AmigaGuide, a hypertext help browser, was included
with 2.1. But I could not find that on any Workbench 2.x system disks.
(Perhaps it was a separate disk or bundled on hard drives?) Commodore permitted
redistribution of this utility, and it also supposedly ran on 1.3 and 2.0.
And shutting down Workbench. Although all this does is leave you at
a blank screen unless something else was running. Presumably this was intended
to free up memory for other applications.
